We hosted our first Fat Bike Day here at Pronghorn Resort and we had great turnout on a sunny February day. Our friends at Hutch’s Bicycles brought their beautiful fleet of fat bikes, and despite the lack of snow, all of our guests had a blast test-riding the bikes on the driving range. There was beer from Worthy Brewing and Wild Ride Brewing, and vodka cocktails from Tito’s Vodka. Because, when in Bend, bikes and beers are the way to go (responsibly of course).
We had so much fun riding through the bunkers and rolling greens on the driving range. Both the kids and adults we saw were so excited to hop on and ride — the bikes were full all day long. We asked John Frey of Hutch’s Bicycles Westside location why he thinks everyone should try a fat bike when in beautiful Bend, Oregon.
Here are some reasons to try a fat bike when in Bend, according to John Frey of Hutch’s Bicycles Westside location:
- Fat bikes are a GREAT way to ride bikes outside in the winter.
- Fat bikes (and plus bikes) can make traditional mountain biking much more approachable to riders who are a bit “trail timid,” in that they can offer more traction and stability on loose or rocky trails.
- Fat bikes are great on ANY surface, and ANY time of the year, but do excel on packed snow (not too deep if it’s unpacked), sand, loose trails, etc. Many folks LOVE them on the beach. And obviously, we had a great time riding through bunkers!
- Fat bikes come in many shapes, sizes, and price points. Fat bikes are incredible fun, but don’t forget the mid-fats! “plus bike” or “mid-fats” have tires around 3″ wide, and are a great way to get the “best of both worlds” interms of the some benefits of a fat bike (usually 3.8″ – 5″ wide), while maintaining the handling and feel of a modern mountain bike (usually with tires 2.0″ – 2.6″ wide)
If you’ve never been on a fat bike, you can rent one from Hutch’s Bicycles. Let us know if you’re interested in trying one out on the mountain bike trails in Bend this spring and summer. We will help make sure you have everything you need.
A rainbow ride on the driving range in February, not a bad start to the day!
Beers and bikes, a match made in heaven. Worthy Brewing brought their StrataSphere IPA to Fat Bike Day, so tasty!
John Frey from Hutch’s Bicycles Westside location takes care to fit each rider on the proper size fat bike. Check out Hutch’s at either East- or West-side location for knowledgeable staff and awesome selection.
Riding through the bunkers was harder than it looked! And a lot more fun. Many fat bike owners enjoy riding through diverse terrain like sand, dirt trails and loose gravel.
Wild Ride Brewing found the perfect pr guy, little Carson!
This might have been the last little circle of snow on the driving range. Our s’mores fire pit helped melt the final bits away.
We like to have fun on the driving range, and it doesn’t always involve golf balls. This spring and summer we will open up the driving range to many family-friendly activities including Foot Golf! Stay tuned for more dates and information.
